It combines a film masterpiece by Alfred Hitchcock with a juicy spy novel and add a large splash of Monty Python humor. The result is a fast-paced whodunit with four versatile actors portraying more than 50 roles!
London, 1935. The rather dull Richard Hannay encounters a woman who claims to be a spy. When she is suddenly murdered, Richard finds himself the focus of a nationwide manhunt led by a mysterious organization called “The 39 Steps.”
This film noir gem is a hilarious comedy full of inventive stagecraft and virtuoso performances that will have you rolling in the aisles until the death-defying, climatic finale.
Character Descriptions
All character ages are somewhat flexible.
Richard Hanney: Richard is bored with life until he finds himself being hunted for murder and trying to find the secret of the 39 Steps. He is chased by British bobbies and dogs, hangs onto the outside of a moving train, is strafed by airplanes, kidnapped by two sinister men in trenchcoats, chased by a jealous, religious crofter, forced to share a room with a beautiful girl (okay, not all bad)…you get the idea.
Annabella Schmidt/Pamela/Margaret:
Annabella is a glamorous, beautiful and nervous spy in a plunging 1930s evening gown . She has a foreign accent and is being chased by the unknown 39 Steps.
Margaret is the wife of a jealous older Scottish crofter, sweet and shy. She falls for the handsome stranger and helps him escape.
Pamela is the girl next door type, Sweet, confident and self-assured. After exposing him to the “police” she is kidnapped with him. When they escape in handcuffs, she continues to doubt him until overhearing the so-called police talking to “the boss”.
The clowns play all the other characters…salesmen, crofter, stage performers, police, villians, etc, etc A tour-de-force of fast paced changes with the funniest results. Preferably (but not set in stone depending on auditions) to be played by either two men, or two women with props, wigs, costume pieces, cross dressing—really great fun.
